Sprint Nextel lost 1.1 million subscribers during quarter three as the company continues to struggle to keep customers. The company posted a net loss of 11 cents a share compared to a net profit of 2 cents a share for the same quarter a year prior sending its shares down 8.4 percent to close at $3.37.

In a preliminary ruling, Judge Bonnie Sabraw ruled that Sprint Nextel must pay California mobile-phone subscribers $18.2 million as part of class-action lawsuit against the company's early termination fees. The move may mark the beginning to the end of early termination fees for wireless carriers.

Sprint Nextel and SK Telecom are in negotiations to create a partnership to develop new handsets and services. Under the agreement SK Telecom will only make a small investment in Sprint with no current news over any merger plans.

Sprint Nextel gained more then any other telecom service provider in the S&P during the second quarter. The company reported that it added more then 33 percent more subscribers in the second quarter than the previous quarter. Sprint also stated that its new Instant phone, a direct competitor with the iPhone, produced record sells.

According to analysts, Sprint Nextel is running out of supply of its new Instict touch screen phone the company began selling last week. The new phone is a direct competitor against Apple's iPhone.

The FCC has given Sprint Nextel an additional 30 days to complete its transition away from the 800-Mhz band. In 2004, the FCC approved a plan to reconfigure the 800 Mhz spectrum in order to deal with harmful interference. Extensions have also been given to emergency personnel.

Sprint Nextel has agreed to pay Chief Technology Officer $469,356 in bonuses if he agrees to remain with the company for at least one year. According to a published report on Tuesday, Sprint's has reached an agreement with Clearwire, combining the two companies wireless broadband divisions. Clearwire traded up 12.4 percent immediately following the news.

Sprint Nextel reported much larger the expected losses in subscribers Friday. The company reported that it lost 683,000 post-paid subscribers during the fourth quarter, much larger then the forecast of 350,000 to 500,000. Sprint stated that it would have to cut around 4,000 jobs.
