Sprint Nextel lost 1.1 million subscribers during quarter three as the company continues to struggle to keep customers. The company posted a net loss of 11 cents a share compared to a net profit of 2 cents a share for the same quarter a year prior sending its shares down 8.4 percent to close at $3.37.

In a preliminary ruling, Judge Bonnie Sabraw ruled that Sprint Nextel must pay California mobile-phone subscribers $18.2 million as part of class-action lawsuit against the company's early termination fees. The move may mark the beginning to the end of early termination fees for wireless carriers.

The company reported that it added more then 33 percent more subscribers in the second quarter than the previous quarter. The FCC has given Sprint Nextel an additional 30 days to complete its transition away from the 800-Mhz band. In 2004, the FCC approved a plan to reconfigure the 800 Mhz spectrum in order to deal with harmful interference. Extensions have also been given to emergency personnel.
