The company posted a net loss of 11 cents a share compared to a net profit of 2 cents a share for the same quarter a year prior sending its shares down 8.4 percent to close at $3.37.

In a preliminary ruling, Judge Bonnie Sabraw ruled that Sprint Nextel must pay California mobile-phone subscribers $18.2 million as part of class-action lawsuit against the company's early termination fees. The move may mark the beginning to the end of early termination fees for wireless carriers.
