Netflix stated that their new streaming movie player based on Microsoft's new Silverlight technology has reduced the number of I.T. jobs the company needs. The company plans to layoff the workers in January.

Netflix has begun releasing video streaming for a portion of its Mac users and is planning to offer wide scale availability the end of the year. The new service is based on Microsoft's silver light technology and allows unlimited video streaming with its DVD rental service.

Netflix reported a 30 percent rise in profits as lowered subscriber costs have increased its profit margins significantly. The company released earnings of $20.4 million or 33 cents a share, compared to $15.6 million or 23 cents a share for the same quarter a year prior.

Netflix experienced the company's largest outage since going public. Nearly 3 million of its customers are affected. Netflix reported that it shipped no DVD's on Tuesday, very little on Wednesday, and none thus far Today as a severe system outage has prevented the company from shipping discs.

Netflix reviled a set top box for streaming movies directly to your television set. The box itself costs $100; however, there are no additional fees for using the service. As if things were not bad enough for HD DVD, Netflix has officially announced that it plans to only carry Blu-ray titles. Netflix reported that since most Hollywood studios seem to be exclusively supporting Sony's format, there is little reason to continue to carry HD DVDs. Netflix plans on phasing out of its current HD DVD rentals by the end of the year.

Netflix announced Thursday plans to start offering a new service to deliver movies directly to the television later this year. The plan includes using a set-top box produced by LG Electronics that will download media over the internet and then display it on the television. A Citigroup analyst issued a warning Wednesday that Netflix could see lower revenues due to a recommended surcharge on online media rental services, whose return mailers often require manual processing. In a report filed by the U.S. Postal Service it was noted that about 70 percent of DVD return envelopes have to be manually processed because they "sustain damage, jam equipment and cause missorts... Netflix Inc. reported Q3 earnings of 23 cents per share beating analysts expectations of 15 cents a share. This compares to earnings of $0.18 per share in 2006. However, even though Netflix's earnings are up, the number of new subscribers was down 1 percent over a year ago.
