Netflix reported a 30 percent rise in profits as lowered subscriber costs have increased its profit margins significantly. The company released earnings of $20.4 million or 33 cents a share, compared to $15.6 million or 23 cents a share for the same quarter a year prior.

Netflix experienced the company's largest outage since going public. Nearly 3 million of its customers are affected. Netflix reported that it shipped no DVD's on Tuesday, very little on Wednesday, and none thus far Today as a severe system outage has prevented the company from shipping discs.

As if things were not bad enough for HD DVD, Netflix has officially announced that it plans to only carry Blu-ray titles. Netflix reported that since most Hollywood studios seem to be exclusively supporting Sony's format, there is little reason to continue to carry HD DVDs. Netflix plans on phasing out of its current HD DVD rentals by the end of the year.

Netflix announced Thursday plans to start offering a new service to deliver movies directly to the television later this year. Netflix Inc. reported Q3 earnings of 23 cents per share beating analysts expectations of 15 cents a share. This compares to earnings of $0.18 per share in 2006. However, even though Netflix's earnings are up, the number of new subscribers was down 1 percent over a year ago.
