In a sign that the retail industry is one of the industries being hit hardest by economic conditions, J.C. Penney has slashed its first quarter guidance. The company now only expects to report earnings of 50 cents per share significantly lower then its previous estimate of 75 cents a share. J.C. Penny stated that although the tax rebates may help a little; they expect lackluster sales throughout 2008.
